Here is a little history about the dates grown in the Coachella Valley from the Desert Sun News Paper:

“The desert’s love affair with dates germinated in the early 1900s when a fascination with the Middle East mystique invaded American culture, spawning a slew of movies in the following years that included “The Queen of Sheba,” “Cleopatra” and Rudolph Valentino’s memorable 1921 silent film “The Sheik.”

Coachella Valley date growers capitalized on the romanticized Arabian theme as a way to promote the region and market the still mysterious fruit. During the 1950s, date shops – some resembling pyramids and Bedouin tents – sprouted along Highway 111 from Indio to Mecca. Not all retail date outlets survived, but the industry did, and with a flourish.”
